PayPal

Pros

  1. It is free to set up and has no monthly fees for basic service. You pay them when someone pays you.
Note: Free PayPal accounts include only the ability to accept credit cards through your website store.
  1. Integrated shopping cart.
  2. An online Virtual Terminal is available for $30/month - less than the monthly fees of many other merchant accounts.
  3. The discount rate for AmEx is lower than most other merchant accounts (2.9% at PayPal - about 3.5% elsewhere).
  4. PayPal takes eChecks at the same 2.9% rate.
  5. No contract required.
  6. More information here.

Cons

  1. Some prospective purchasers will not buy online if PayPal is the only payment choice.
  2. Some programs require monthly fees.
  3. PayPal does not offer card-swipe terminals or telephone call-in service.
  4. The discount rate for Visa & MasterCard is higher than most other merchant accounts (2.9% at PayPal - less elsewhere).
  5. PayPal refunds to a customer credit card can take up to 6 months.

Authorize.net

Pros

  1. No purchaser issues with using Authorize.net
  2. At the point when you are selling somewhere between $4,000 and $6,000 per month online, it becomes cheaper to use Authorize.net than PayPal because the discount rates for Visa and MasterCard are quite a bit less. Visa and MC make up the bulk of most clients' credit card sales.
  3. Authorize.net is one of the biggest and easiest to work with providers of internet payment gateways - offered by a great many banks nationwide.
  4. Hassle-free integration into your website payment system.

Cons

  1. Most programs require setup & monthly fees (Check with your provider).
  2. 2-3 Year Contract Required
  3. Authorize.net doesn't offer a hosted shopping cart. We use one I built just for your website, but it has fewer features than you will get with the PayJunction or PayPal shopping carts.
  4. Reporting features on the Authorize.net website are minimal.
  5. There are no facilities for simple recharging of cards on file for frequent customers.
  6. Additional setup required for subscription purchases.
  7. No facility for capturing and exporting customer information for marketing campaigns etc.
Note: You can pay an additional monthly fee for better features
  1. More information here.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

  1. Please contact me before you sign up with any merchant account processor, so I can be sure that your website store will support the payment gateway.
